Next Wealth by Dr Sridhar Mitta

November 14, 2009 in Events, Guest Speaker, Meet Report, TAA TALK

Time flies by!.

It’s already a month since we met for Dr.Sridhar Mitta’s talk on Next Wealth, his initiative on Social Entrepreneurship.Dr. Mitta walked us through the path on how a profitable venture can be run along with the considerations for social need.

The Vision for Next Wealth is multiple social ventures, with the characteristics of , Social, Profit,Technology,Scalable and Replicable.

Dr. Mitta sighted a couple of examples, the first one is the example of a blood bank in Vellore. In four years of it’s existance it hasn’t shown much growth. Next Wealth has taken upon itself to transform this into a profitable venture. They are working on employing IT for better service, cell phone search for donors, providing health reports to donors and others are a part of this attempt. They are also working on converting blood into red blood cells, platlets, plasma etc, so as to maximize the donor-receiver ratio. The plan is to grow from serving 100 patients per month to about 5000 patients a month, all this while being financially viable at the same time.

The other example he gave was on rural job creation. 6-7k per month is a good amount for graduates in rural areas, for them not to move to a city. Next Wealth identified a few centers near Salem, Hubli, Chittor etc, to setup these centers. The criteria a center has to meet are

  • Center is to be setup in a rural area.
  • The center to have about 150 people. Anything less will mean its not financially viable, anything more logistics become a concern.
  • Type of work handled at a center should be simple well defined process(not some 20 different things at a center).
  • Local entrepreneurs should manage these centers, with help from their unrban teams.
  • Investments for the center also to come from the local area, this is to help replication and growth.
  • The skills required from people should be completley available in the area.
  • Bandwidth, Power etc. to be available reliably

What we see here is a paradigm shift from setting up a large center to large number of small centers. The goal is to setup 50 centers employing 10K people, all this without any donations, grants, and interventions from government. Another big barrier is how to convince the CEO’s of firms that the above is a viable proposition. They would not believe it, but if given the picture of “$/hr”, then things look very different. At $2 per hour, a lot things which look impossible today become a possibility.

There was a Q&A sessiong at the end of his talk, followed by introduction of 2009,2008 batch passouts who are presently in Bangalore. Kimi anounced to the audience that, one of our alumni Mr. Shankar Maruwada is part of the UID project, headed by Mr. Nandan Nilekani.

We broke for networking and dinner post this.It was a great time with about 35 of the alumni present.

We are again meeting on 12th September(Saturday) at 5:30 Pm. This time we have Mr.Anal Jain presenting on “Microfinance- A solution to poverty in India?”.

Corporate Social Responsibility – By Manaswini

June 6, 2009 in Events, Guest Speaker, TAA TALK

It’s about 8 weeks since that memorable meet with Dr.Harish Hande(NH, 1990). About 25 of us who got to share some rare insights from Dr. Harish and of course had great time meeting each other. The past 8 weeks, I am sure were eventful both at work and home. Now is the time to catch up, with old buddies, the new ones from old days and spare a thought to the cause of Social Responsibility through one of our alumni Manaswini(SN,2001).

We are meeting on 27th of June at Koramangala Club, Bangalore at 5Pm. The agenda for the evening is as follows:

Date: 27th June 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 5:00 Pm
Venue: Koramangala Club, Bangalore

Agenda:

  • Presentation on “Service – A social responsibility or the business I seek? & proposed projects. – 30 min.
  • Open platform to share experiences or opinions related to CSR – 30 mins
  • Wrap up and moving forward plan – 15 mins
  • Snacks / cool drinks & networking (Beer on chargeable basis)

To give you a brief on the Speaker, Manaswini(SN,2001) is a very active member of the Bangalore TAA chapter. She is also very actively involved in various community activities both as a representative of her employer and on a personal level. She is one glaring example of managing the corporate life and the social life in a balanced manner. She will present to us on how we as a corporate or individuals can integrate business operations with socio-economic development of various stake holders and the communities.

The following is what Manaswini has to say about CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an initiative by corporate world to integrate business operations with socio-economic development of various stake holders and the communities.

A broad term “Service” is the appropriate domain that represents my topic of interest for this session. It enables a collaborative support platform intended in reducing the supply demand gaps to achieve sustainable community development & step towards good governance. It typically ranges from providing infrastructural aid to support growth of marginalized section of the society; & conversely generating Innovative business models & new business avenues.

Hence, the paradigm of “Service” or CSR merges different dynamics; such as humane & ethical approach, with corporate governance & best business models. There is an inherent responsibility of every capable human being to contribute his/her worth to make their life blissful; who are deprived of bare essentials.

The quote aptly describes this inherent responsibility:-

“Do not believe that you can by means of service- reform or reshape the world. You may or may not; that does not matter. The real value of service, its most visible result, is that it reforms you, reshapes you. Do service as a spiritual discipline; then you will be humble and happy. “

So, what are you waiting for, block your calendars on 27th June, 5:00Pm.

Be there else you are missing a lot!

There is a nominal fee of 75Rs for Annual and Life Members and 100Rs for non Members. More details about membership can be found at the event.

For all those who want to come but are put off by Bangalore Traffic, we have car pooling offered by some of our alumni.
